Banu
Age: 12 years
Grade: 6
School: Annapurna Boarding School,
Kathmandu, Nepal

Banu lives in Thamel with her mother and father, supported by her mother, a street vendor. Banu studied through third grade under severe financial constraints that had rendered her unable even to replace her uniform since beginning school three years ago. Banu's parents were struggling to send her to school. With the help of NCEF, Banu has continued her schooling and was recently promoted to the sixth grade.

Kumar
Age: 8 years
Grade: 1
School: Jana Prabhat Secondary School,
Kathmandu, Nepal

Kumar lives with his mother, Maili, in the squatters. area of Kalimati in Kathmandu. Maili sells vegetables in the local market area and earns less than $20 per month. NCEF is helping Kumar prepare for a better future by sponsoring his education.

Ojina
Age: 10 years
Grade: 6
School: Vishwa Niketan School,
Kathmandu, Nepal

Ojina's mother looks after Ojina's baby sister at home while Ojina and her 11-year-old brother attend school. Ojina's family moved to government housing after her father's death, and an NCEF scholarship has enabled Ojina to continue her schooling.

Rajkumar
Age: 12 years

School: Jana Prabhat Secondary School,
Kathmandu, Nepal

Rajkumar lives in the squatters. area of Kalimati with his mother Sunita and his three siblings. He attended school until the second grade but had to drop out because of his family's financial situation. His mother's occupation as a fruit vendor is the family's only source of income and provides only about $20 per month - barely enough to survive. With the support of NCEF, Rajkumar is now in the sixth grade.

Surakshya
Age: 12 years
Grade: 8
School: Amrit Secondary Boarding School,
Kathmandu, Nepal

Suraksha has two siblings, and her family is supported by her father, a newspaper vendor who earns only about $30 per month. Suraksha would have had to leave school after sixth grade without the help of NCEF, which pays now pays her school and exam fees and covers the cost of books, school supplies and a uniform.

Ujeli
Age: 9 years

Her mother's occupation as a fruit vendor is the family's only source of income and provides only about $20 per month - barely enough to survive. With the help of NCEF, Ujeli has begun attending school with her brothers.

Ansu
Age: 10 years

School: Lokhit Lower Secondary School, Bhagwan Bahal,
Kathmandu, Nepal

Ansu's mother is an office sweeper earning about $31 per month; her father is unemployed. With her education sponsored by NCEF, ten-year-old Ansu can look forward to a better future.

Poonam
Age: 13 years

Kathmandu, Nepal

Eleven-year-old Poonam had no formal schooling until this year. Her mother left the family, leaving Poonam's father, an uneducated carpenter, to care for four children alone on an income of about $30 a month. As the oldest daughter, Poonam is responsible for much of the household work, but she is also eager for an education. Funds from NCEF will pay for school fees, books, and school clothes for Poonam.

Prem
Age: 7 years
Grade: Nursery
School: Pashupati High School, Chahabil,
Kathmandu, Nepal

Prem's mother earns less than $13 a month as a hired farm worker - less than a subsistence wage. Prem always loved books and hoped to study, but his father had abandoned the family, and his mother could barely afford to feed her children, let alone give them an education. Tragically, Prem's thirteen-year-old sister was abducted and sold into the sex trade in India. Prem always loved books, but when his mother could not afford them, he resorted to stealing them from others. Prem's mother hopes for a better future for Prem, who now attends school thanks to an NCEF scholarship.

Bimala
Age: 11 years
Grade: 6
School: Shram Rastriya School,
Kathmandu, Nepal

Bimala's parents work as seasonal farmers, able to find paid work only for six months a year. Eleven-year-old Bimala helps support her family, including two siblings, by working as a maid. Thanks to NCEF, Bimala is now receiving an education and can hope for a better life one day.
