Isn't education free in Nepal?
The Education Ministry of Nepal has established schools across the country to provide education to children. However, much of the cost of education is not met by the government. School uniforms, stationery and supplementary text books are some of the critical components of a child's education that is underfunded. NCEF supports students from very poor backgrounds to help make it easier for students to remain in school.
While selecting students to support each year, NCEF picks students who are most in need of our support. Our children are frequently from poor families with many mouths to feed. In a country like Nepal, education can sometimes be seen as a burden by poor families who may find their children's help very useful.
Does NCEF operate any schools?
No. NCEF does not operate any schools itself. We support students financially by paying their fees not covered by the government, providing them with uniform and books, and pay for other academic expenses that they need support with.
How does NCEF run with almost zero cost?
It would be almost impossible for any organization to run with zero cost. At NCEF, we try to keep our administrative costs as low as possible so that most of the money goes to supporting our students. We do not have a physical office. Much of the work is done by volunteers working from home. None of our volunteers, whether in Nepal or elsewhere, receive any form of compensation for their service. We may pay for travel costs, such as bus fare for Nepali volunteers' student visits, but we do not have any salaried staff.
