Hira
Age: 10 years
Grade: 3
School: Manakamana Boarding School,
Nepalgunj, Nepal

 

Hira lives in Nepalgunj with her grandparents, farmers whose monthly income is less than $8. Although her grandparents want Hira to receive a proper education, they could not possibly afford to send her to school. Hira's NCEF scholarship will fulfill her grandparents. hopes for her future.

Puja K
Age: 14 years

Nepalgunj, Nepal

Puja's father supports a family of five on a meager income of about $28 per month as a transport worker. Due to the country's current political situation, even this tiny income is uncertain, and the family lives from hand to mouth. Despite their parents' strong desire to keep Puja and her sister in school, the girls would certainly have had to leave school if not for NCEF's support. Puja entered first grade in 2004 on an NCEF scholarship and was recently promoted to the second grade.

Puja lives in Nepalgunj with her mother, two brothers and a sister. Her mother works as a hired help and earns about $250/year. Puja has many responsibilities, including household chores and taking care of siblings. The NCEF scholarship will provide her the opportunity she never had before.

Shushila
Age: 10 years

School: Pashupati Primary School,
Nepalgunj, Nepal

Shushila's father supports a family of eight on an income of about $42 per month. His job is soon to be eliminated, leaving the family dependent on whatever seasonal farm labor he can find. Sushila, the oldest of three children, began her education in 2004 with support from NCEF.

Trishna
Age: 4 years

School: Shining Star English Medium School,
Nepalgunj, Nepal

Trishna's mother was abandoned by her husband and earns less than $15 a month by running a small shop - barely enough to cover household costs. In the hope of improving her and her daughter's situation, Trishna's mother is also trying to continue her own education in the ninth grade. She desperately wants Trishna to receive an education but could not afford the fees at even an inferior school without the help of NCEF.

Rabisha
Age: 10 years

School: Shree Chandra Mewalal English Boarding School
Nepalgunj, Nepal

Rabisha's family has been in financial crisis since her father lost his job after a company closing. The family's small house is held as collateral for a loan to pay for their children's schooling. With no job prospects, Rabisha's parents have come to the end of their resources, and Rabisha and her sister would have had to leave school without the support of NCEF.

Sujal

School: Shree Chandra Mewalal English Boarding School,
Nepalgunj, Nepal

Sujal's father runs a small tea stall, earning less than $32 per month. On this tiny income he could not afford to continue Shree's schooling, although Shree is an unusually good student. Thanks to NCEF, Shree and his family now have a brighter future.

Pabitra

School: Modern Public Boarding School,
Nepalgunj, Nepal

Pabitra's mother was abandoned by her husband. A local organization helped her to open a small tea stall, her only source of support for herself and her three children, one of them just a baby. Seven-year-old Pabitra had no chance of attending school until she received a scholarship from NCEF.

Manish
Age: 6 years

School: Bright Future,
Nepalgunj, Nepal

Manish and his mother have been homeless since Manish's father left the family. His mother has no job and no way to pay for Manish to continue in school. With the help of NCEF, Manish is now in his second year of school. An education will give him the means to support himself and his family one day.

Hastanath
Age: 16 years

School: Shree Dhamboji High School,
Nepalgunj-1, Nepalgunj

This young man of Adarsha Tol, Nepalgunj is an 8th grader at Shri Dhanbogyi madhyamik Bidhyala. He has been working(distributing newspapers) in order to cover his schooling/other expenditures since grade 5. His two siblings didn't attend school at all and the eldest sibling of 28 years old discontinued his studies after 5. The sons help their father in agriculture and the daughter is busy in household chores. They have no mother. Hastanath is a good student but because his family has been facing some serious economic problems, he fears he has to discontinue his studies like his other siblings.

Milina
Age: 12 years

School: Rani Talau Primary School,
Rani Talau, Nepalgunj

Residing in Gagangunj, Nepalgunj, Milina studies in grade 5 at Ranitalau Prathamik Vidhyalaya. One among her 5 siblings is continuing her 12th grade, two failed grade 10, one is a laborer and the other is in grade 6. With both her parents unemployeed, Milina's sister has been providing for the family's expenses. Her family has to further bear with other social evils because they're from a so-called lower caste.

School: Mangal Prasad High School,
Sotkendra Mangal, Nepalgunj

A 5th grade student at MangalPrasad M.P High School, Shiva lives with 2 of his siblings and his widowed mother. One of his siblings discontinued his studies due to worsened economic condition. His mother is unemployed and his relatives are financing his education.He wants to study further but he himself doubts if he will be able to continue his studies. He is an average student.

Sonal
Age: 11 years

School: Rani Talau Primary School,
Rani Talau, Nepalgunj

Resident of Nepalgunj, Sonal is doing her 3rd standard at Rani Talau Primary School. With her father's mental illness and weak financial conditions, her father's sister has been supporting her till date. A few months ago, she lost her job so Sonal has no one financing her education now. She is a keen student and has been performing fairly well academically.

Usha
Age: 13 years

Paraspur-6, Nepalgunj

Temporarily at Nepalgunj, Usha is continuing her 6th grade at Gyan Sagar madhyamik vidhyalaya. Her mother fled with anther man right after Usha's birth. She is a brilliant student and hr teachers say that all her works are praiseworthy. It is also known that she works at some other household to support her own education.

Anjali
Age: 14 years

School: Pashupati Shikshya Mandir,
Nepaljung-8, Nepal

With both her father and her brother dead, Anjali lives with her unemployed and aged mother. Her family currently has no economic support, and therefore Anjali hasn't been able to attend school for the last nine months. She hopes to continue her education and wants to be a teacher once she has completed her studies.

Kamala

School: Mangal Prasad High Secondary School,
Nepalgunj-6, Nepal

Kamala is the youngest daughter of a family with 6 children. With her father bringing in a low income each month, her parents aren't able to afford sending Kamala to school along with her four older siblings. Therefore, they are seeking economic support from NCEF so that all five of their unwed children can be educated.

Salu

School: Pashupati Shikshya Mandir,
Nepalgunj-6, Nepal

Salu comes from a poor family which doesn't even have a home to call their own. Her mother earns less than $2 each month to support the family of five while her father is unemployed and uncaring and her older sister is mentally ill. Her mother hopes to educate Salu with the support from NCEF as she has no other way of doing so.

Suraj
Age: 18 years

School: Mahendra Madhyamik High School,
Ramnagar, Nepalgunj

Suraj lives with his mother who supports the family of 4 after Suraj's father left them. Suraj's mother can't afford to educate him, but Suraj wishes to continue his education. "I will study hard and do something," he says.
